But the majority I see in major publications have big salaries.And look, making more money and having a higher salary certainly can help you in big ways.More income equals more tauglichkeit to save.Generating more income helped me as well, which well get into below.But, I wanted to share my salary sortiments for when I started my first full-time career of college to present.(Not giving the exact amounts to keep some f orm of privacy.My salary could be on the low end, middle or higher end of ansicht ranges during the timeframes).2010 2014 ($30,000 $36,000 Pre-tax)2014 2017 ($36,000 $46,000 Pre-tax)2017 Present ($46,000 $85,000 Pre-tax)It also wasnt until late Summer and Fall 2014 when I started to take my personal finances seriously and work on build a savings rate andgenerating secretsMade expense cutbacks (to an extent)Seeing all the numbers, it made me realize where I was either overspending or wasting money on things that really wasnt important to my quality of life.One area I caught, was that I was clearly overspending on food and going out socializing.Nothing wrong with it, but it should be in moderation.I also caught monthly memberships that I wasnt really utilizing much, so I canceled them.Small things like this wont make you rich, but these cutbacks will help you save more.I was happy to have $50-$100 back a month to save instead.Additionally, I made efforts to save on living expenses.Moving out of a one bedroom apartment, to a two bedroom with a friend to split costs for example.Pay off some piece of debtNo doubt, saving money is hard when you also have debt.I had student loan debt, a car loan, and a little bit on my credit card.It was a bit foolish for me to get a brand new car in 2011, when my salary was low, had no real savings, and was living on my own, but its what I did.However, the car loan had the highest interest and was over $320 a month.Getting that back to save each month would be a nice percentage increase and adds up quickly.I started putting a bit extra a month first to get this lower and then in early 2017 I paid off the remaining balance in one shot.Took a hit in my savings at first, but quickly recovered with my savings rate and now the extra $300+ I get to keep.Ideally, you dont want to carry debt forever.Many people might have chosen to aggressively pay off their debt over saving, but I did both.Iwrote more about that here.Side hustlesI understand not everyone wants to do side hustles, but I found them to be incredible helpful in my financial journey in a few ways.First, making more money which could go towards either expenses or right to savi ngs.And second, they helped boost my professional knowledge.I learned a lot about absatzwirtschaft and websites by starting blogs, consulting, and freelancing when I could.That in turn, was value I could add to my resume to get higher paying jobs and showcase my worth to companies.If you are looking for some side hustle ideas with serious income potential, check out this list.Increase career worthThere is no question that increasing my salary helped me boost my savings rate.However, making more money is not guarantee youll save well either.You have to have the financial foundation set, as to not fall into the traps of lifestyle creep.During my savings rate strategy, there was a point where I plateaued unless I was making more money.I hit around 40% savings rate, when there was no room left to save (unless magically my student loans went away).While cutting back expenses helped, there is only so much I could save on.But, with making money, there really is no limit.So besides side hus tling, I worked to improve my career in marketing.In 2017, I took a remote lokalitt with a higher salary, which gave me an extra 25% boost in my savings rate.Keeping the consumer mentality in-checkOur society has a consumer mentality problem, we get obsessed with stuff.I still like the occasional nice thing and feel its important to treat yourself in some way.But, letting it get out of control hurts your savings rates and puts you in debt.I dont think there are any secrets to managing this other than practicingself-controland keeping your financial goals top of mind.It took a bit to break this habit, but once I did, I never looked backed.Two things that help here, are remove your credit cards from one-click payments on shopping websites and also wait 24-48 hours before making a purchase.By asking myself if its worth it and sleeping on it, 9/10 I realized I didnt need it.Create good financial habits that become the normOnce I got my consumer mentality in-check I continued with good f inancial habits.Meaning, earning more, spending less, paying myself first, some budgeting, etc.Your old financial habits that are hurting you are not easy to break.But as you start and keep your goals in mind, youll find good habits easier to do.It will get to the point where you dont even think about it anymore, you just naturally do it.I also quickly became addicted to the progress I was making with my savings rate.This made me want to keep going with what I was doing.At some point, this all became the norm and a daily part of my life.The Path to 100% Savings RateMy next goal is to get in the 70-75% range and then ultimately, be at 100% savings rate from my salary job.Because I love food and traveling, getting to my next level of 70-75% is quite challenging.But paying off my remaining student debt will free up more capital to save, increasing my job salary again, and making money off Invested Wallet will help get me there.Im not extremely frugal, probably never will be.Im sure if I got more into that, I could easily get the percentage higher.But the effect on quality of life isnt worth it to me.Yes, its okay to enjoy and spend money on yourselfBut I have my daily money habits in check and I really shed the consumer mentality, which keeps saving money easier.I think 70% will be the max I can achieve at my current love of income.My goal in the next few yearsBuilding my side hustles and investments up to cover 100% of my monthly expenses, to then be able to save and invest 100% of my Doing these well is the fruchtwein important strategic role of the manager or the Human Resources professional. In what other capacities can you contribute more to the success of your organization than in encouraging employee involvement and employee engagement? Employee involvement and employee engagement matter to your organizations success. In The New Pioneers The Men and Women Who are Transforming the Workplace and the Marketplace, Thomas Petzinger, Jr., discussed the pieces of a powerful revolution currently reshaping the face of American business. HR professionals leading the charge on these is recommended for their personal relevance and professional support of their organizations. Petzinger, the former longtime writer of the Wall Street Journal column, The Front Lines, and the author of tw o additional books, drew his conclusions from corporate case studies of companies in more than forty cities in thirty states and worldwide. Some of his most important conclusions are highlighted in this article. The highlighted workplaces demonstrate environments in which motivated people choose to work. Employee Involvement Lives in a Workplace Where People Thrive Being good in business calls on being good at being human, Petzinger concluded after studying the turnaround of Rowe Furniture Company. Rowe, which had been a very traditional manufacturing company, identified the need to utilize the brains and talent of its employees. Charlene Pedrolie, its manufacturing chief, truly believed that the people doing the work should design how the work is done. With the assistance and consultation from a much-reduced management team and engineers, workers redesigned their work. They moved from an environment in which each person handled part of a work process to fully cross-trained manu facturing cells producing a whole product. From standing at an assembly position all day long, they created work which allowed some freedom and movement. They eliminated the formerly deadly dull jobs. At the same time, the flow of information they received, which allowed them to know exactly how they were performing, increased dramatically. The new sense of personal control, according to Petzinger, bred a culture of neuerung in every eckball of the plant... It reveals the creative power of human interaction. It suggests that efficiency is intrinsic that people are naturally productive that when inspired with vision, equipped with the right tools, and guided by information about their performance, people will build on each others actions to a more efficient result than any single brain could design. Tap Staff Potential Through Employee Involvement In his company research, Petzinger found important and consistent themes relating to vision, employee involvement, control, measuremen t of work processes, simplicity, communication, fun and energizing environments, excellent work tools and training, and commitment. If you can create these in your organization, youll retain your committed, motivated employees. At HalfPrice books, Pat Anderson, the late founder, recognized the importance of having leid just a big vision, but one that benefits society. People are energized by feeling as if they are part of something bigger than themselves. She also believed that day-to-day management was about tracking information not controlling people. She also encouraged a sense of play at work, realizing it was good for the business. Teams for Employee Involvement in Continuous Improvement At Monarch Marking Systems, Jerry Schlaegel and Steve Schneider had a deep respect for the minds of their workers. When confronted with a workplace in which people had been paid not to think, they instituted a small set of simple rules to break that mindset. They required people to particip ate in teams that were formed specifically to improve a particular performance numeric. Teams were allowed no more than thirty days to form the team, study a problem or opportunity, and implement a solution. Perhaps a bit heavy-handed to start, the success of over 100 teams has created a new culture within the organization. Petzinger quotes Herb Kelleher, founder and Executive Chairman of the Board of Southwest Airlines, a company known for its profitability, its dedication to people, and a fun and energized work environment. Ive never had control and I never wanted it, says Kelleher...If you create an environment where people truly participate, you dont need control. They know what needs to be done and they do it. I sought out the source and added more from Kelleher. He continued, Were not looking for blind obedience. Were looking for people who on their own initiative want to be doing what theyre doing because they consider it to be a worthy objective. I have always believed that the best leader is the best server. And if youre a servant, by definition youre not controlling. More Examples of Employee Involvement and Employee Engagement Great Harvest Bread Company owners realize that franchise owners learn the most from each other. Others can learn from Pete and Laura Wakemans philosophy of rewarding knowledge and innovation sharing. They pay half the cost of a franchise owner or employees travel to any other franchise in the country to pick up new ideas. This reimbursement is deducted from franchise fees, so the people that travel the most for ideaspay the least royalties.Bill Armstrong founded Armstrong Ambulance which had grown to 300 employees serving 350 patients a day. Armstrong recruited and retained the most experienced and loyal paramedics by providing the best tools, the best vehicles, and the best training in his industry in the region. According to Petzinger, an employee, using different words, but conveying the same thought, described the re wards of working at Armstrong as belonging, self-esteem, and self-actualization, all in one. Employees were proud to work for Anderson and to know that when they showed up at an emergency room, the staff respected their experience. Dupont Manager, Richard Knowles, when leading a manufacturing plant in a more participatory manner, decided to stop setting goals for people because he always set them too low. He discovered that when people found meaning in their work, he could count on them donating their discretionary energy.This is the energy, enthusiasm, and hard work available, beyond the minimum required to keep a job, when people work in conditions that allow them to find meaning at work. This is the energy organizations want to tap to fully utilize employee involvement and employee engagement for organizational and personal success. While this article has focused on several of the people aspects of Petzingers findings, Petzinger talks about the actions of groundbreaking pioneers in other areas as well. He discusses their devotion to customer service, as in give the customer exactly what they want when they want it. In Everyone a Middleman, he emphasizes connections and dependencies that result in the alliances companies make as small businesses to serve larger customers. (Think outsourcing HR functions.) He points out that almost every business is a family business, to one degree or another. He is excited that business concerns and social concerns are blending in this new economy. A key element of Goodsons latest round of research, in collaboration with researchers at the University of Tokyo and Nagoya University and outlined in a paper published last year in Nature Materials, was to create a way to collect and measure thermal data from the nanopeapods, which hasnt been done since they were discovered nearly 15 years ago. The community has been waiting a long time to learn about the impact on thermal transport because the measurements are so hard, Goodson says of the nanotubes, which are made from sheets of carbon atoms and rolled up into cylinders that are 500 times thinner than a human hair. Those provide resistance to the system, slowing the heat flow and increasing the thermoelectric effect, Goodson says. To capture the thermal details of the structures, the researchers had to find individual nanopeapods that were aligned in a mesh platform, allowing them to measure the heat moving through the structures. After the location with the appropriate sample is identified, Dr. Kodama was able to initialize that particular cell and proceed with the measurement, Goodson says.It was this insight and innovation on the experimental side of things that enabled the breakthrough measurement. The team now had a carbon nanotube structure that could lead to promising thermoelectric applications in the future. It’s when your body and brain react as if you are in a life-threatening situation. You often rush headfirst into action.That’s great if you’re an EMT. It’s not so great if you’re trying to get your career back on track. That’s when you want to take strategic action toward your career and life goals.A few years ago, I was in the midst of a career crisis. I was frustrated because I had been stuck in the same role for way too long, and I didn’t see a way out. I was also stressed out because the hours were ridiculous, I didn’t have much time for a life, and I didn’t feel like I was making a difference.I decided to take action. But at first, I didn’t take the time to get out of crisis mode. Instead, I started doing anything I could think of to find a new job. I posted on LinkedIn. I rewrote my resume. I worked my network. I applied for anyt hing and everything that seemed like it would get me out of my situation.I created a lot of frantic activity, but it didn’t get me where that I wanted to go. I had quite a bit to clean up after I came to my senses - I looked like a flake who didn’t know what she wanted to be when she grew up.When you have an injury, there’s a handy acronym for the things you need to do to take care of yourself: RICE (rest, ice, compression, elevation). I’ve repurposed it to help you get some emergency first aid for a career crisis. R: Relax and rejuvenate; I: be inquisitive and intentional; C: be compassionate with yourself; E: set an expectation that you will solve your crisis (just not right now). I took a couple of days off and went to Lake Tahoe, which provided first aid for the soul for me. Then, I did these three things to get back on track.1. Craft a strategyI knew that didn’t want to do what I had been doing for the past few years: leading organization and IT initiatives. Project work is often full of stress and deadlines and  requires a lot of overtime.I also knew that I needed to make some big lifestyle changes, but my career didn’t have to suffer. In fact, I realized I could actually be more focused.So I came up with a plan and identified  the most effective actions to find a different job.  These were focused actions, not scattershot. I didn’t just go apply for jobs. I did research on companies and roles. I told select people in my network that I wanted to make a strategic move, and I only followed up on things that fit into my strategy. I took a couple of online courses to open up my thinking.If you’re stuck in your career, take the time to plot out steps to make a change instead of rushing headlong into action.2. Find the perfect matchA job search is a lot like dating. I was looking for a two-way match, not just someone who would hire me. I had to want them, too!I came up with my own list of interview and research questions.  High on the list for me was culture, making a difference, and being challenged.Surprisingly, money and title were lower on the list than I would have guessed.Some questions on my list were: What are the core values and performance metrics? How is success rewarded? What happens when someone goes against the values? What’s the turnover rate, and how much is unintended? What are some examples of growth within the organization? Not everyone wants the same things out of a career. Ask yourself what is most important to you.3. Discover transferable skillsThese first two steps made me realize that I wanted to go into coaching. But how could I make the switch?I looked more broadly into my life and experiences to find sk ills that would translate into this new profession. I realized I already had business and project management skills that I could apply as a personal coach.Take stock of what abilities you already possess and how you can use them in pursuing your goals. Retain Young Employees With These 2 Steps Retain Young Employees With These 2 Steps As managers and recruiters know, the new norm for American workers sees them changing jobs far more frequently than was once customary, especially younger professionals. The US Bureau of Labor Statistics  reports that in general, employees stay in their jobs for an average of five years while those in the 25-34 age group stay in the same role for an average of just three years. Both HR and the managers they partner with share the responsibility to retain the best talent. Instead of spending company resources training junior-level staff, only to lose them in a few years to another company, consider the strategies below to keep as many of your top workers as possible. Promote engagement:   A Gallup survey  found that about 33 percent of American workers report to be engaged at work; nearly 50 percent of American workers are “not engaged”; and about 16 percent are “actively disengaged.” Building engagement is critical to retention efforts. HR teams and managers can analyze employee engagement by first looking at their team through the eyes of their junior employees and evaluating their leadership efforts from this perspectives. It’s a helpful exercise for managers to ask themselves: Do the members of my team get the chance to interact with me directly? Is the culture in which they work fair and balanced? Does my staff get the message that their contributions matter? What do my team members’ futures look like on our team and in our organization?     If managers want their team members to stay, they should make that abundantly clear to their staff. Managers should make their staff member feel valued. Managers send that message by reminding their team members how much their efforts matter, inspiring their team, celebrating them and helping them develop professionally. While not all managers are naturally demonstrative or articulate, HR can help managers by providing training, suggested wording and incorporating these types of discussions into performance reviews.     A great manager like a great teacher has to possess the right balance of subject matter knowledge and interpersonal skills. If managers can achieve this then they can truly set the stage for team engagement.       Forge a trajectory Entry level staff will get restless if they feel that they don’t have a career trajectory. Finances matter since many of them have college debt hanging over their head and they need to know that they can move forward financially.  But most junior employees also want to grow professionally. And younger workers in particular need a clear path to show them that they are progressing in their careers. Young employees appreciate having the opportunity to discuss their career ambitions with their managers. They want feedback and a sense of direction.  Managers can support them in this by being open and honest with their staff members about their workâ€"what they do well and what they can do to improve and to continue maturing professionally. Again HR plays a role here. Many managers benefit from coaching and role play activities to help them learn how to provide constructive feedback. HR can also facilitate manager peer forums to allow managers to discuss sticky personnel situations in a supportive and confidential environment. Managers can help junior employees plan for their future on their team and with their organization by creating a professional 2016 New Year’s resolution with them. Providing a list of career aims and needed skills will give junior staff members a sense of direction and purpose. It will make them feel supported and send them the message that their manager is cued into their abilities, needs and goals. It will also give them physical documentation that their manager has a plan for them, and that may be just what they need to keep them engaged for longer than three years.

Changing them feels impossible.Now there are plenty of tricks  from standard psychology on how to deal with  bad habits.  But  what if there was a way that really helped you understand yourself better? Something that wasn’t just a “lifehack”, but actually led to a fuller way of living life?Yeah,  that’s a big fluffy promise. Addictions. He founded the Yale Therapeutic Neuroscience Clinic and wanted to help people conquer one of the toughest bad habits: smoking.What tool did he use? It was that “mindfulness” thing everyone is always blabbing about.He was hoping mindfulness  could match the results of the “gold standard” for treating cigarette addiction, a system called “Freedom From Smoking.”  But  mindfulness didn’t match it…It crushed it.From  The Craving Mind:When the data came back from our statisticians, the participants in the mindfulness training group had quit at twice the rate of the Freedom From Smoking group. Better yet, nearly all mindfulness participants had stayed quit, while many of those in the other group had lost ground, yielding a fivefold difference between the two!We’re often told that you can’t get rid of a  habit; you can only replace it. Heck, even I’ve said that.But mindfulness  didn’t replace  smoking with anything:  â€œO ur data showed that mindfulness decoupled this link between craving and smoking.”So he’s really on to something here. Something you can use to beat your bad habits. (And something I can use to stop checking  Instagram  while writing blog posts.) So how’s it work?First, we gotta ask the question nobody usually bothers to ask: why do we have  bad habits in the first place?Bad Habits Are Coping, Not FixingYou feel stressed. Or anxious. Or sad. Whatever. Point is, you’re feeling  not-good. Naturally, you want to feel good. So you  do something that has made you  feel good in the past.Maybe it’s checking Facebook, maybe it’s meth. Same difference to your brain.From  The Craving Mind:We each have stress buttons that get pushed, and what they are largely depends on how we have learned, in a reward-dependent manner, to cope (or not cope) with life…  It’s the standard habit model:  Trigger, Behavior, Reward.  And after you do it enough times, it’s a reflex. You’re instinc tively reacting, not thoughtfully responding. You’re on autopilot. You’re a puppet.But the real issue with bad habits is while they scratch the itch, they don’t fix the underlying problem. Being worried about your bills might lead you to check Facebook, but that doesn’t make Mark Zuckerberg pay your mortgage.In fact, bad habits  not only don’t fix your problems, they often make them worse.From  The Craving Mind:We have conditioned ourselves to deal with stress in ways that ultimately perpetuate it rather than release us from it.And checking Facebook is actually a perfect example.From  The Craving Mind:Lee’s research team found that a preference for online social interaction correlated with deficient mood regulation and negative outcomes such as a diminished sense of self-worth and increased social withdrawal. Let me say that again: online social interaction increased social withdrawal. People obsessively went on Facebook to feel better, yet afterward felt worse.But since you’re reacting instinctively, you  rarely notice your bad habit is actually making the problem worse. And that’s where mindfulness comes in:  noticing.Noticing is  at the heart of mindfulness. But what  is  mindfulness?  Don’t worry, I’ll make it simple…  Pay Attention. Don’t Judge.  When you’re stressed and engage in a bad habit, you’re usually not paying attention. And if you do pay attention, you’re probably frustrated. Frustrated that you feel this way. Frustrated that you’re doing something you know is bad.Take a step back. Pay attention. Don’t judge.From  The Craving Mind:(Mindfulness is) “The awareness that arises from paying attention, on purpose, in the present moment, and non-judgmentally.” As Stephen Batchelor recently wrote, this definition points toward a “human capability” of “learning how to stabilize attention and dwell in a lucid space of non-reactive awareness.”By really watching what you do, noticing how you feel, you can start to  realize the bad habit isn’t helping fix the problem. You don’t really feel any better. And that realization is key. That’s what will break the cycle.From  The Craving Mind:Seeing what we really get from our habits helps us understand them on a deeper level, know it in our bones, without needing to control or force ourselves to hold back from smoking. This awareness is what mindfulness is all about: seeing clearly what happens when we get caught up in our behaviors and then becoming viscerally disenchanted. Over time, as we learn to see more and more clearly the results of our actions, we let go of old habits and form new ones. The paradox here is that mindfulness is just about being interested in, and getting close and personal with, what is happening in our bodies and minds. It is really this willingness to turn toward our experience rather than to try to make our unpleasant cravings go away as quickly as possible.Cravings fade with time - but you  usually don’t pay at tention to that part. When the internet goes out in your house you’re initially frustrated… but then you find something else to do.But when you  immediately give in to bad habits, you  reinforce them. The Dark Side of The Force gets stronger.But that leads to the million dollar question: how do you  cope with that awful discomfort until the craving fades?(To learn the 4 rituals neuroscience says will make you happy, click  here.)You  can use the same four-step mindfulness process that helped people quit smoking. Brewer  calls it RAIN: Recognize, Accept, Investigate, Note. Here’s how it works…1 â€" RecognizeYou’re feeling stressed. You’re robotically headed toward  habit-mode…Recognize it. And don’t you even think about rationalizing it:  â€œOh, but I just  happen  to feel like checking Instagram for the fiftieth  time today.”No. No, you don’t “just feel like it.” Realize what you’re doing. You’re trying to cope  with some discomfort by engaging in your ba d habit. Recognize the craving.This next part is trickier…2 â€" AcceptAccept it.  That doesn’t mean “give in.” Just accept that the craving is there.  Don’t beat yourself up  for wanting it. Don’t try to ignore it, or try to distract yourself, or fight it.The good news is: you don’t have to do  anything  just yet.The bad news is: it’s hard to do nothing when you’re uncomfortable and want to scratch that itch.Brewer recommends acknowledging your acceptance in a small, active way. Nod your head or think “here we go.”Now here’s where things get interesting…3 â€" InvestigateNormally you deal with bad habits by trying to get away from them. Mindfulness does the exact opposite. Get curious.As the craving grows, notice how you feel. Specifically.From  The Craving Mind:Investigate  it as it builds. Do this by asking, “What does my body feel like right now?” Don’t go looking. See what arises most prominently. Let it come to you. The key here is “nonidentification.” Remember: you are not your thoughts. Your brain thinks all kinds of crazy stuff. That doesn’t mean those thoughts  are  you. If you broke your arm, you’d say “my arm is broken” not “I am broken.”So investigate your  feelings as if you were looking at  an animal in a zoo. Check it out. Watch things unfold.  Pay attention.And here’s how we make the itch go away without scratching it…4 â€" NoteMake mental notes of your  feelings. Use a single word or a short phrase to put a label on what you feel.From  The Craving Mind:Finally, note  the experience as you follow it. Keep it simple by using short phrases or single words. For example: thinking, restlessness in the stomach, rising sensation, burning, etc. Follow it until it completely subsides. If you get distracted, return to the investigation by repeating the question, what does my body feel like right now? See if you can ride it until it is completely gone. Sounds silly  but it’s actually extremely powerful. You’re using some bleeding-edge neuroscience here. Noting reduces the impact of emotions.Via  The Upward Spiral:…in one MRI study, appropriately titled “Putting Feelings into Words” participants viewed pictures of people with emotional facial expressions. Predictably, each participant’s amygdala activated to the emotions in the picture. But when they were asked to name the emotion, the ventrolateral prefrontal cortex activated and reduced the emotional amygdala reactivity. In other words, consciously recognizing the emotions reduced their impact. Don’t dodge the feelings. Investigate them and note them. The craving will subside. It’ll be hard at first, but with time it will float away just like every thought - good or bad - eventually does.Checking Facebook isn’t going to solve your problems. Let’s round it up and get the answer to  how this all leads to a better life…Sum UpHere’s how mindfulness can kill bad habits: Bad habits are coping, not fixing: Checking Facebook didn’t pay your bills. But it did make you jealous of your friend’s new car. Pay attention. Don’t judge: Notice what you’re feeling. Being worried about being worried just makes you super-worried. Recognize: Dealing with something is quite hard if you don’t realize there’s something. Accept: Did you really think I was going to recommend denial? C’mon. Seriously. Investigate: You are not your thoughts or feelings. They are things that are there. Examine them. Note: When you give a feeling a name, your brain calms down. (Unless that name is “Godzilla.”) Okay, this all leads to a very simple two-step formula for a good, mindful life: Feeling  good? Pay attention.Feeling  bad? Pay attention.When you feel good and pay  attention to it, it’s a wonderful, happiness-boosting thing called  savoring. You really appreciate the good moments instead of taking them for granted.When you feel bad and pay attention to it, you don’t succumb to bad habits. You can realize where the feeling is coming from. You can learn about yourself. And then do something that will fix the problem.Most of us are pretty good at enjoying the happy feelings. You love the content, though it is a bit long; and you understand the advantage of “free for companies; cover charge for the job-seeker”.Fantastic!Now, there were also a lot of useful comments on making the product better: You’d like more control over geography â€" search by state, search by city, search by distance from your zipcode. You don’t like the jobs popping open in new windows. You want keyword search â€" my long-running diatribe against keyword search notwithstanding. So when you, the customer, demand keyword search, we will get you keyword search pronto! You also feel that daily updates would be better than weekly updates. So please stay tuned for your ever-improving Ladders.com!GETTING YOUR RESUME SEENYour fellow reader, Lisa, writes in with this great tip:I hate to give away my secrets because I always find great jobs and get them, but here is one secret I’ve used for the past two job hunts successfully. I do most of what you have suggested in your letter below for mass mailing and combing through the market. But once I have find tuned the search to the 4 or 5 companies I REALLY want to work for, I send my resume in a priority mail or express mail envelope. These larger, more impressive envelopes ALWAYS gets opened first when the mail arrives on someone’s desk. And of course by this time, I would have the name of the HR person who will be hiring for that job title. On these resumes with cover letters, I always print on nice paper and I reference someone in the hiring department who suggested I get my resume to the HR representative (them) as soon as possible. The trick here is that you have to really have fine tuned the search down already but I find this works particularly well in niche industries. And, if everyone started doing this, it would become less effective, of course, but in the ten years I have employed this tactic, I have yet [to find] it NOT to work at getting me noticed and ahead of the rest of the 400 resumes that came in at the same time.
